GorongosaGorongosa National Park is approximately 3,770 square kilometres in area and is situated in the lower Pungue River catchment area in the floor of the Great East African Rift Valley in the Sofala Province of Mozambique. Due to its proximity to the coast (approx. 100km) and the presence of scattered inselbergs, the region is of varied habitats including afro-mountain forest, highland and lowland miombo woodland, mopane woodland, extensive palm/grasslands, thickets, swamps and lakeshore. The Urema Lake, which is fed by rivers originating from the Gorongosa Mountain, is the main ecological feature of the park. Situated right in the center of the park, it is the main source of water in the peak of the dry season. In the North, the Park is bordered by two Game Controlled Areas (Areas de Vigilancia de Piro e Kangantole ) which constitute an important wildlife corridor and buffer zone with the northern region. The South, which is the most populated area, is delimited by the Pungue River. The Eastern side of the Park is, the Cheringoma Plateu, an extensive natural forested area considered to be the richest in the country. This area is under intensive studies to permit sustainable logging in the future. In the West of the park are the Midlands, which lead up to the extensive Gorongosa Mountain range.
